The Social Action Committee of the Yorktown Jewish Center was formed 16 years ago.  The mission of the committee is to ease poverty in our area in collaboration with other local organizations.   Our programs have expanded over the years and currently we provide the following resources as the result of our work:

  • We provide dinner on the fourth Sunday of each month for the 30 residents of the Jan Peek Homeless Shelter in Peekskill;

  • Just before Rosh Hashanah we distribute empty supermarket bags which the congregation fills with non-perishable items and returns to the synagogue by the evening of Kol Nidre.  The food is then donated to the St. Mary’s Episcopal Church Food Pantry;

  • On Thanksgiving, as part of a Head Start program, we collect specific food items in baskets for those families designated as the area’s neediest;

  •  In time for Veterans Day, we collect new underwear, hand-knitted lap blankets, hats, scarves and funds for leisure activities which are then brought to the  Veterans Administration Hospital in Montrose;

  • During the December holiday season, in conjunction with the Girl Scouts, and coordinated by school social workers, we collect wrapped new “wish list” gift items for needy families;

  • During Passover, we provide take-home bags of food for a community seder for persons with developmental disabilities at Temple Sha’aray Tefila;

If you would like to help us give back to our community, please join us at one of our meetings held at 10:00 AM on the second Sunday of every month at the YJC.  If you miss a meeting, we will send you a summary to keep you up to date until the next time you can come.  We look forward to your help!
